Gesa Thiessen

Rozet – Lokaal 3.07

Wednesday 23. October 14.00 – 17.00

All skill levels welcome!

Workshop Description: In this workshop, Gesa will share her knowledge as an English saddlemaker. She was taught to cut leather parts for customers’ orders by hand with a round knife, and she would like to share these skills with everyone who struggles to use their round knife effectively and efficiently. Gesa will start with a short introduction into sharpening round knifes and how to use them safely. Topics covered will be: techniques to cut various shapes of strap tips, skiving buckle ends, how to cut small circles, and learning skiving techniques for firm and soft leather. You will take home a belt blank with a cut tip and skived buckle end and knowledge of how to master this versatile tool.

Materials to bring: Round knife, cutting surface (small glass plate), and note taking materials.

Workshop Instructor: Gesa Thießen found her love for leathercraft while making model horse tack during her teen years.
Her love of horses and leathercraft let her start a three-year apprenticeship at Passier
& Sohn, a traditional German saddlery, where she is still employed. During her
apprenticeship, she met other young saddlemakers and was introduced to leather
carving. This started her passion for any kind of artistic leatherwork.
