Workshop Description: There is a beauty and a spirit in the deserts of the southwest that look amazing when captured in leather. Join Jim Linnell in this workshop and he will show you the leather carving techniques he uses to capture these images. In addition to the different cactus and foliage, the terrain of this part of our country echoes with mystery. While learning how to capture The Spirit of the Desert Southwest in a pictorial carving, student will learn pictorial carving skills that will help them get more depth and detail out of all their leather carving. This is the first time this class has ever been offered at a leather show and you will not want to miss it.

Materials to bring: tooling stone, mallet, stylus, swivel knife, modeling spoon, medium to small checked bevelers (both steep & low angle), matting tools of a couple different textures, figure carving bevelers of various sizes, grass and foliage stamps such as F933, F934, F120, F902-2, F976. and one sheet of 80-grit or coarser sandpaper.

Workshop Instructor: Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. Now, after spending the last 50+ years working with leather, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Through the business he started in retirement, www.elktracksstudio.com, Jim instructed over 10,000 students during the pandemic. Whether in a large group or private classes, Jim is always ready to share his passion and knowledge of leather working.
