All skill levels welcome!

Workshop Description: Create a beautiful, authentic, Red-Tailed Hawk tail feather out of leather! You will learn not only how to make and paint a miniature version of this feather, but also consider the feather’s functionality and purpose based on the year of Yonezawa’s research. Come experience Yonezawa’s thought process and approach to art in this workshop. During class, you will use a hair blade to add texture, but if you want to achieve a more realistic result similar to Yonezawa’s, you will need a wood burning system with the tip of the pen properly sharpened.

Materials to bring: Leather knife, sharp skiving knife, X-acto knife, cutting surface, stitching groover, glue spreader, #400 grit sandpaper, wood or bone folders, fine hair blade or wood burning tools (optional: I use Colwood’s “The Cub” with spade and spear tips), 1/2″ and 3/4” oval wash brushes, round brush size 1, blow dryer, paper towels, sponge, double-sided tape for clothes/bag making, ruler, artist’s palette, and small container of water for cleaning brushes. You will also need the following acrylic paints from Gesso or Liquitex Soft Body: Ultra Marine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Burnt Sienna.

Workshop Instructor: Takeshi ‘Yone’ Yonezawa started leatherwork in 2001 in Tokyo, Japan. He started working with leather first as a hobby, but it slowly became a passion and a full-time profession. Leather is now the canvas of choice for Yone’s creativity; each leather product is created and treated as a functional art piece.

Yone’s training includes years practicing traditional Sheridan style of tooling, two years of bag making, and an apprenticeship to a master specializing in exotic leather skins. It was under this tutelage that Yone mastered the use of skiving and sewing machines to refine and balance his craft.

Yone moved to the Portland, Oregon in 2014 and founded YONEZAWA LEATHER, LLC. He regularly attends and competes in leather shows and enjoys judging and teaching seminars when not creating. Yone’s art pieces are displayed in galleries and shops in the US and Japan.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co., Renia USA, and Tandy Leather
