Workshop Description: In this one day workshop, Joshua will share his knowledge and experience of bookbinding in this beginner class. Designed for beginners with little to no experience making a book, the workshop will cover the basics of binding a book using a premade “block” (the text/pages of a book). The class will require basic cutting, measuring, and gluing skills. If time permits, the second portion of the workshop will cover the process of sewing a “block” from scratch and directly sewing/binding into leather to create a small journal great for selling at craft shows. Basic sewing skills will be required for this portion.

Materials to bring: Pencil/pen, eraser, fine tip sharpie, metal ruler, cutting mat, knife (rotary knife preferred for thin garment grade leather), and a fine point awl. Optional: paper for notes and small needle nose pliers (not required, but may be helpful for some with finger strength or issues sewing).

Workshop Instructor: Joshua Merrill is a self taught leather worker currently living in Clearfield, Utah, and working on his Bachelor’s degree in Japanese and Translation. Starting leather work in 2010 after buying a starter kit for himself when looking for Christmas gifts, he has always strived to push his knowledge and to pursue aspects of leather work that appeal to him such as book binding, shoe and bag construction, costume creation, personal goods, and braiding, while including pop culture and Japanese designs. He works towards a fusion of Japanese and American design aesthetics with the goal of opening a shop in Japan and teaching classes around the world. Find him on Facebook, Instagram, and more at merrillsleather.
