Serge Volken Ralf Meisel

Rozet – Lokaal 3.14

Wednesday 23. October 09.00 – 17.00

All skill levels welcome!

Workshop Description: The Leatherphant is an example of multi-layered 3-D composition, taught by Serge Volken and Ralf Meisel in tandem. Serge starts with a bit of design theory: Dividing a picture into separate layers and planning a composition; discussion and demonstration of different 3-D techniques relating to the plasticity of leather (leather fillers, plugs, modeling, and casting). Ready-made fillers will be provided. Then, it’s time for hands-on: Shaping, modeling and texturing leather, skiving, and constructing the layered elements. Complete the project in less time than you’d ever have thought. Ralf will guide you through the coloring, demonstrating techniques of monochrome shading and other hints he has up his sleeve. Each participant should be impressed with their own work at the end of the day. That is how we measure the success of the class and so far, it has always worked!

Materials to bring: Paper, pencil, tracing paper, bone folder, scratch awl, tracing and modeling tools, some bevelers and pear shaders, mallet, small carving stone, sharp knife or click blade box cutter, skiving blades, and a picture frame (minimim 13 x 18cm, preferably wood).

Workshop Instructor: Born in Switzerland and residing in the city of Lausanne Serge Volken has been working for over 40 years on leather decoration techniques and designs. After two decades as professional leather worker he closed his shop to the public and went back to an amateur status, achieving a creative freedom he never had before. As a creator of innovative designs he inspires many fellow artisans around the globe. Recipient of the prestigious Al Stohlman Award in 2017, as first representant from the European continent, he aims at developing alternative design styles for the arts and crafts to complement traditional patterns.

Ralf Meisel has worked with many materials and art forms in his past. However, his more than 30 years of experience with other media is now fully integrated into his work with leather. Since 2017, he successfully runs the only German-language, leather-oriented YouTube channel “RABOMsLEDERKISTE”. In hundreds of videos, he inspires new creative minds for leather craftsmanship year after year and ensures that this creative craft is passed on to new generations. The saying, “If you have stopped learning new things, you have stopped being good!” is his motto in life. This never-ending curiosity and the combination of tradition and new techniques characterize his work. Ralf speaks German and English.
