Workshop Description: In this two day course, you will tool a design in leather to achieve a “silver bit” and scrolls pattern, design a unique geometric border, paint the wildflowers, bit, and border, and antique and finish the project. This will be an intense, two-full-days’ workshop. The information you gather will easily translate to so many other projects! Additionally, Clair will provide each student with a robust packet of information to take home that covers in-depth information on the tooling portion, border design, and the painting and finishing as well. You’ll leave with a beautiful artwork to take home and inspiration for many future projects.

Materials to bring: Leather carving tools such as (but not limited to) a modeling tool, wing dividers, ruler, swivel knife, strap, maul, undercut bevelers, bevelers, pear shaders, veiner, camouflage tool, mule tracks and stops, backgrounder, geometric, and border stamps, spray bottle, or sponges, paint brushes and palette (palette does not need to be fancy; you can use a plastic lid). Notebook, pen, and pencil. Make sure to bring your own water, drinks, and snacks. You are not required to work through lunch, but Clair probably will and you are welcome to stay through the lunch hour if you would like.

Workshop Instructor: Clair Kehrberg grew up on a cattle ranch in eastern Oregon. She began working with leather in high school with local saddle maker and friend, Tom Berry. She then attended the saddle making school at Spokane Falls Community College with Verlane Desgrange. After graduation, Clair apprenticed with Randy Severe for a summer before heading home to John Day to open her own shop in 2004. In 2007, she received the TCAA scholarship and was awarded the opportunity to study with Dale Harwood. Clair has made a wide variety of leather items. She continues to study the craft and has recently begun teaching.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co., The Fiebing Company, Renia, and Duffs Leathercare
