Workshop Description: Rocky will demonstrate the Porter Style of covering a saddle horn on several different styles of horns, including a leather-bound edge. Porter Style saddlemakers do them quite differently – the horn cap is more symmetrical and comes out round or slightly egg-shaped, rather than flat across the back, and the neck has much less tapering from the bottom to the top. Students will receive patterns for horn covers.
Materials to bring: Note taking materials. Cameras are welcome.
Workshop Instructor: Rocky is a master Porter-style leatherworker and professional saddle maker. He began learning the Porter-style stamping from accomplished saddle makers at an early age and got his start in saddlery while still in high school at the Leland “Tumble” Weed saddle shop. Later, he worked for Porter-trained Frank Eberle in Prescott, Arizona, he then moved on and worked in other saddle shops in Arizona and Colorado under some other great saddle makers: Ray Pohja, Mervin Ringlero and Fletcher Whitlow. In 1970, he opened his own saddle shop in Chandler, Arizona, and later forced to move his shop to Gilbert, where he still works in his saddle shop, building saddles and his buckaroo horse equipment and personal leather items.
