Workshop Description: Learn how to make a traditional and durable handle by shaping stacked leather into a core and finishing it with hand stitching. Handles greatly influence the overall look of a bag, often being considered the “face” of the bag. If you’ve struggled with handle making in the past, this is a great opportunity to improve your skills!

Materials to bring: Japanese style leather knife (available for purchase in class), skiving knife, stitching awl (should be sharp), pricking iron, needle, thread, beeswax, sandpaper #400, edger, cutting surface, glass surface, hummer, glue spreader, divider, bone or wood folder, small sandbag, pliers, and a pen.

Workshop Instructor: Takeshi ‘Yone’ Yonezawa started leatherwork in 2001 in Tokyo, Japan. He started working with leather first as a hobby, but it slowly became a passion and a full-time profession. Leather is now the canvas of choice for Yone’s creativity; each leather product is created and treated as a functional art piece.

Yone’s training includes years practicing traditional Sheridan style of tooling, two years of bag making, and an apprenticeship to a master specializing in exotic leather skins. It was under this tutelage that Yone mastered the use of skiving and sewing machines to refine and balance his craft.

Yone moved to the Portland, Oregon in 2014 and founded YONEZAWA LEATHER, LLC. He regularly attends and competes in leather shows and enjoys judging and teaching seminars when not creating. Yone’s art pieces are displayed in galleries and shops in the US and Japan.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co., The Fiebing Co., Renia USA, and Silver Creek Leather
