Workshop Description: Learn how to design Western floral patterns with purpose for an actual project. In this hands-on class, Don Gonzales will walk students through his process for developing a floral pattern specifically for a finished leather project. Students will learn how to establish flow, choose focal points, balance positive and negative space, place flowers, build stems and leaves, use fillers, and make the entire composition work within the shape of the project. Students will begin with the same predetermined shape for a project to develop an understanding of layout and design. After that, students should bring a pattern shape from a project they are currently working on or would like to build. During class, they will use that shape as the foundation for developing their own floral design. The goal is to help students move beyond simply copying existing patterns and begin understanding how to create original floral artwork that fits the project, flows naturally, and reflects their own developing style.

Materials to bring: A paper pattern shape for the project you would like to design a pattern for and sketchbook for drawing, notes, and continued design practice.

Workshop Instructor: Don Gonzales become interested in leathercraft while in 8th grade, when a friend’s father shared some simple skills with him. He went from making sheaths and belts and saddle repairs to eventually owning his own shop and going full-time in 2004. He credits Jimmy Plantt for many life lessons and skills learned, in addition to those from his many online friends. In October of 2020, Don launched a new, weekly podcast, Lost Trade. Don lives in Moulton, Texas.
