Workshop Description: A bell knife skiver is a really simple and useful machine, but they don’t work well if something is set up incorrectly. You will learn how to control this skiving machine and learn some skiving techniques. We’ll start with setting up the machine (bell knife, feed roll, and sharpening stone placements and how they all work together), learning how the presser foot works (choosing a presser foot, getting different types of edge skiving, and making a custom presser foot), and finally, we’ll learn together how to adjust the settings (for thin/thick skiving and splitting leather). (Please contact Yone if you are a NP-10 user at yonezawaleather@gmail.com). {You’ll be using COBRA bell knife skivers (NP4 and NP10); if you are interested in purchasing COBRA equipment at the show, call Leather Machine Company by February 1 to pre-order at +1 (866) 962-9880. Deposit required.}

Materials to bring: Note taking materials.

Workshop Instructor: Takeshi ‘Yone’ Yonezawa started leatherwork in 2001 in Tokyo, Japan. He started working with leather first as a hobby, but it slowly became a passion and a full-time profession. Leather is now the canvas of choice for Yone’s creativity; each leather product is created and treated as a functional art piece.

Yone’s training includes years practicing traditional Sheridan style of tooling, two years of bag making, and an apprenticeship to a master specializing in exotic leather skins. It was under this tutelage that Yone mastered the use of skiving and sewing machines to refine and balance his craft.

Yone moved to the Portland, Oregon in 2014 and founded YONEZAWA LEATHER, LLC. He regularly attends and competes in leather shows and enjoys judging and teaching seminars when not creating. Yone’s art pieces are displayed in galleries and shops in the US and Japan.

Workshop Sponsors: Leather Machine Co., LLC
