Workshop Description: Take your floral tooling beyond the practice panel and apply advanced techniques to a piece of leather that is designed to become part of a finished project. In this hands-on class, Don Gonzales will guide students through tooling a purpose-designed Western floral pattern while focusing on the finer details that create depth, movement, dimension, and a clean professional appearance. Students will work through advanced swivel knife work, beveling, shading, backgrounding, decorative cuts, tool selection, and the transitions between each step of the tooling process. But this isn’t another square practice panel. The pattern and leather used in class will be designed as an actual project component. Students will leave with a completed floral-tooled panel that they can later take home and use to build the finished project. This class is intended for students who already have a working knowledge of basic floral tooling and are ready to refine their technique, improve their execution, and apply those skills to purposeful leatherwork.

Materials to bring: Complete floral carving/stamping tool selection including stamp lifters, strop board, swivel knives, pencils, sketchbook, transfer film or paper, mauls and/or mallets for stamping, stylus, headlamp if needed for better lighting, tooling stone, spray bottle or sponge & water dish, notebook for notes, and petal lifters if you like using those as well.

Workshop Instructor: Don Gonzales become interested in leathercraft while in 8th grade, when a friend’s father shared some simple skills with him. He went from making sheaths and belts and saddle repairs to eventually owning his own shop and going full-time in 2004. He credits Jimmy Plantt for many life lessons and skills learned, in addition to those from his many online friends. In October of 2020, Don launched a new, weekly podcast, Lost Trade. Don lives in Moulton, Texas.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co.
