Workshop Description: Challenge yourself to think outside the box and draw inspiration from unexpected places with a non-traditional approach to scroll designs. This in-depth course will cover basic art principals as they relate to big picture layout and design, the use of negative space to your advantage, effective borders and framing, creating movement and flow, the impact of color, and how designs relate directly to the tools in your arsenal. Whether you are just beginning to draft your own patterns or have years of experience and are looking for fresh insights and inspiration, this drawing class will set you up for success. If you prefer scrolls to enhance your design and not overwhelm, then you will love this non-traditional approach. Apply what you learn with challenging design exercises throughout the class. Emphasis will be placed on overall design and contributing elements rather than perfecting scrollwork specific details. My Scrolls, Scrolls, Scrolls course covers that topic in greater depth and is an excellent companion course. Take home sketches you create in class to put on leather later. My goal is not to teach you to imitate my style, it is to give you the foundational tools and concepts to allow you to confidently draft beautiful patterns true to your own unique style.
Materials to bring: Notebook, drawing paper, pencils and eraser, straight edge, optional drawing tools (compass, French curve, etc…), pattern transfer paper (optional), pen, personal leather stamping/carving tools, maul, and a tooling stone.
Workshop Instructor: Sarah Garvey is a full-time leather artist specializing in intricately tooled purses and accessories. A single mom of two, she has been designing and creating under her brand, Western Skies Handmade, since 2008. With a background as a classically trained musician, Sarah’s distinct style elevates traditional craft with a fresh blend of classical and modern designs.
