Workshop Description: Take your tooling to the next level by learning how to efficiently draft patterns like a professional artist. Don’t leave the success of your designs up to chance, wasting precious time and erasing hours of work. Learn how to approach layouts with a plan and stand out from the crowd. Whether you are comfortable drawing scrolls or wanting to break away from patterns and draw your own, this class will help you to step up. Class kicks off with a foundational crash course in Art 101, learning how to speak and understand the fundamentals. The rest of the day will be spent implementing Sarah’s (Western Skies Handmade) entire design process from initial conceptualizing to a final, useable pattern. The focus of this class is not on drawing scrolls, but on the framework that accompanies them. For an in-depth course on scrollwork, sign up for her Scrolls, Scrolls, Scrolls workshop! Past students of Non-Traditional Scroll Design are welcome and encouraged to take this as a refresher and will be pushed to dive deeper.

Materials to bring: Drawing book, graph paper, pen/pencils/eraser, straight edge and ruler, and some circle tools.

Workshop Instructor: Sarah Garvey is a full-time leather artist specializing in intricately tooled purses and accessories. A single mom of two, she has been designing and creating under her brand, Western Skies Handmade, since 2008. With a background as a classically trained musician, Sarah’s distinct style elevates traditional craft with a fresh blend of classical and modern designs.
