Workshop Description: Embossing is often considered an advanced leatherworking technique, but once you understand how to set it up, it isn’t necessarily more difficult. It simply gives you a completely different way to create with leather. In this hands-on class, Brandon “Swift” Corral will break down the differences between traditional tooling and embossing, then show you how to prepare a tooled project for embossing using relief filler. You’ll learn how to build and shape the filler, create clean transitions, and take advantage of the additional layer of dimension that embossing brings to your artwork. The goal isn’t simply to make your tooling deeper, but to use that added dimension as part of the design itself. You’ll leave with a finished piece of embossed artwork and a new technique you can take into your future projects.

Materials to bring: Please bring a pen or pencil and a knife you’re comfortable with. We will be cutting 6/7 oz tooling leather and painter’s tape. You’re welcome to bring your own tooling supplies and/or tooling slab. A handful of bevelers, a mallet, a modeling spoon, and a swivel knife will be provided.

Workshop Instructor: Brandon Corral, known as Swift on the internet, is an award-winning leather artist. Having dedicated the past third of his life to leathercraft, Brandon has found a focus on leather tooling and has made it a staple of his career. Having taught marketing for the past two years, his focus has now expanded to also include spreading the knowledge of the subtle art of detailed tooling.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co., Renia, and Silver Creek Leather
