Workshop Description: In the course of learning to carve a classic horse portrait, students will learn the basic techniques of figure carving that would be used for most figure carvings. Learning how to properly create muscles and the hair textures is just the beginning. Participants will also learn about carving the important details in the eyes that give life to your carving. The floral carving that is part of this design is an introduction to traditional and Sheridan styles. This is classic western leather carving at its best. It is a simple and graceful design that will teach all of the important techniques that every aspiring craftsman must know.

Materials to bring: tooling stone, mallet swivel knife, strop, stylus, modelling spoon, hair blade, wing dividers, petal lifter, basic floral carving stamps in medium to small sizes, figure carving bevelers of medium to small sizes, and background matting stamps.

Workshop Instructor: Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. Now, after spending the last 50+ years working with leather, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Through the business he started in retirement, www.elktracksstudio.com, Jim instructed over 10,000 students during the pandemic. Whether in a large group or private classes, Jim is always ready to share his passion and knowledge of leather working. He is the 2002 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co.
