Workshop Description: This workshop will cover pattern layout and flower drawing with pencil and paper. Karla will discuss the basics of drawing flowers and using existing flowers and patterns. Layout will be talked about and demonstrated. Students will then lay out basic patterns, following along with the instructor. After this, the student will be set free to use what they have learned to create a pattern of their own in class, and will be able to lean on Karla for help wherever needed.

Materials to bring: Pencil, pencil sharpener (or spare leads if using a mechanical pencil), tracing PAPER pad, eraser, circle stencils or compass, ruler, and a metal or plastic square. A small roll of Scotch tape or narrow masking tape is optional.

Workshop Instructor: Karla Van Horne likes to think of herself as ‘just another leatherworker’. “I’ve always felt that what I do isn’t about me. Look at the work, not me.” At 10, she became inseparable from leathercraft projects. At 14, she started carving. Her whole life has been spent making custom pieces and teaching leathercraft. To that end, she received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 1989. She is currently writing her first series of books. The first, named “Elements”, is available at leathercraftersjournal.com/shop.
