Workshop Description: In this workshop, you’ll learn to build a solid, all-day headstall. The techniques you’ll learn could be used for any other headstall. We will start with cutting the pieces, refining the edges, and then stamping the cheekpieces and browband. After that, Steffen will show you how to fix the buckles with latigo strings. The browband will get a simple, yet fancy, knot in the middle. After attaching all hardware, you will complete final assembly of all of the headstall pieces.

Materials to bring: Cutting board, stamping stone, head knife or any other cutting tool you use, wing dividers, stamping tools (like basket stamps and/or border tools), maul, edge beveler, spray bottle or sponge & water dish, heavy scratch awl for widening the holes for lacing, notebook, hole punch tools, hammer, and paper/pencil for transferring the patterns.

Workshop Instructor: Steffen Würtz completed his saddle maker’s education in 2001. Since that time, he has operated his own saddle shop in southern Germany. In addition to building western saddles and making tack, Steffen is no stranger to many types of saddle repairs, which has helped to further develop his skills as a leather worker and saddle maker. Steffen speaks German and English.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co., The Fiebing Company, and Weaver Leather
