Workshop Description: Looking for a deep study into what it takes to produce clean, crisp, and detailed floral and figure carvings? Want to learn how to carve challenging patterns that require detailed execution to do it justice? The most skilled craftsmen are always challenged by small details. In this class, Jim Linnell will show how he tackles some of the smaller carvings he has done. While experience and practice are still the secret, this workshop is for the leather craftsman who might think their leatherwork has stopped improving, but doesn’t know how to get to the next level.
Materials to bring: Tooling surface, mallet, swivel knife, strop, fine stylus, fine hair blade, modelling spoon, medium to small pear shaders, medium to small steep angled bevelers, medium to small camouflage stamps, fine veiners, seed stamps, stop & mules foot stamps, matting-style background stamps in smaller sizes, matting stamps of your choice, and figure bevelers such as F895, F891, F890, F902, F898 & F899.
Workshop Instructor: Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. Now, after spending the last 50+ years working with leather, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Through the business he started in retirement, www.elktracksstudio.com, Jim instructed over 10,000 students during the pandemic. Whether in a large group or private classes, Jim is always ready to share his passion and knowledge of leather working. He is the 2002 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.
