Workshop Description: Western engravers face many challenges unique to our trade. We must be versed in everything from bright cutting to gun engraving to jewelry engraving and stone setting. We often have very large or very small, uniquely shaped items to hold and engrave, sometimes requiring special tools and fixtures, as well as knowing what style or patterns of engraving works with a piece. Starting with individual projects, we will cover everything from design to execution. We will discuss and demonstrate ways of adding interest to your engraving through the use of borders, negative space, unique patterns, fine tuning, and stone setting. We will talk about and demonstrate engraving overlays, beveling edges, how to handle hard to reach areas, how to fill in backgrounds, etc. We will demonstrate engraving conchos, saddle silver, bracelets, and belt buckles. We will discuss design, how to approach an engraving project, what styles are best, what borders are best, what obstacles you will have to work around, etc. Students are encouraged to bring ideas and/or projects to discuss and to try out the different techniques and tools.
Materials to bring: Paper and notebook. Projects in the works or in concept only.
