Workshop Description: Analyzing Don King’s floral design is a topic that never gets old. Basic principals of laying out Don King’s designs, like connecting circles, filling in the pattern with single, double and triple leaves will be covered. Tools that lend the pattern character will be shown and demonstrated. Finally, finish cutting, that enhances and shades the different figures, will be shown.

Materials to bring: Notebook, pen/pencil, drawing tablet, and something to take pictures with. No videos allowed.

Workshop Instructor: In the winter of 1968-69, Steve heard of a saddle making school in Ralston, Wyoming, which he signed up for. It was his good fortune to discover that Cliff Ketchum was the instructor. Cliff eventually left the school and asked Steve if he would like to work with him in his shop between Ralston and Cody, Wyoming. Don King and Cliff Ketchum were friends when Cliff was working at Porter’s Saddle Shop. Through Cliff, Steve met Don King and was immediately captivated by his sense of design and leather carving. Steve had his own saddle shop in Roundup, Montana, and after that, he had the good fortune to move to Sheridan, Wyoming and worked with Bill Gardner, Don King, and Chester Hape.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co. and The Fiebing Company
