Workshop Description: In this class, Leandra will walk you through how to design a custom, drop-in style liner with a leather-trimmed upper for an existing bag. This is primarily a design and demonstration class, where you’ll learn the process of creating a liner pattern that fits your bag well and looks clean and intentional. She’ll start by taking measurements from a tote bag, drawing up a custom liner design, and discussing ways to refine and perfect the pattern. Then, she will demonstrate the full process on an unlined tote bag, including how to prepare the bag for a drop-in liner using techniques like skiving, folding, and taping, so the liner sits neatly inside the bag. Time will also be spent discussing leather choices and liner fabric options, and how those materials affect both the look and structure of the finished liner. Students are encouraged, but not required, to bring a tote bag or another similar basic-style purse so you can take measurements and begin sketching a custom liner design specifically for your bag. Along the way, Leandra will talk through design considerations, fit, and the small adjustments that help create a polished final result. This class is a great opportunity to learn the thought process behind designing custom liners and gain confidence in adding them to your own bags.
Materials to bring: Tailor’s measuring tape, 2 white poster boards (or 24″ x 18″ artist heavy weight paper), 6″ x 24″ quilter’s ruler (or similar size), pencil, eraser, and a notebook. Optional: Bring an unlined bag that you have made that you would like to learn to design a liner for.
