Joe Boyles and Nick Carter
Edward A. Whitney Academic Center – W 209
Saturday 05/17 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Intermediate to Advanced
Workshop Description: This is NOT a workshop for beginners. We will be braiding with para cord so you the student can concentrate on technique rather than keeping the strands right side up. We will be using six- and eight-strand round braids, 13- and 11-strand Trena patria braids. We will also be teaching the transitions between these different braids. Three will be two different styles of eight-strand braiding and a crown knot. This will be a fairly intense workshop and will require a lot of concentration for the majority of the time. Nick and Joe have taught together for about seven years and compliment each other’s styles of teaching.
Materials to bring: If you have a small pair of vise grip pliers and a vise that clamps to a table, please bring it (and any table protection as necessary). Neither are required, but would make things a little easier if you have them available. You will probably want note taking material and well as a camera for those still photos of this process. Be ready to learn.
Workshop Instructor: Joe Boyles began braiding while in Australia in 1988 after getting his first Ron Edwards book. Back home, he was taught rawhide by Mary Fields, who is in the Bruce Grant books, and also attended Dale Moore’s saddle building school. Kangaroo and rawhide are his preferred materials to braid with. He started braiding Australian stock whips a few years ago and is now starting on bullwhips. Joe enjoys teaching and will keep you entertained while you learn.
An accomplished braider currently residing in Casper, Wyoming, Nick Carter is a working man’s braider who has been making and sometimes selling his braided goods for over 24 years. Always willing to share and learn techniques, Nick offers his services with great enthusiasm every chance he gets.
