Workshop Description: The focus of this workshop is to provide a solid foundation for anyone already repairing saddles and tack or contemplating doing it. Subject matter consists of identifying the parts of saddles and tack, the relationship each part plays, procedures necessary and suitable leather to repair each, materials, and supplies needed to do the job. A saddle will be dismantled during class, while discussing how they’re put together, what to look for and where to expect to find problems and their causes. Considerable focus will be placed on types of saddle trees, their make-up, bar design, and what constitutes good and bad fit. Bob will go over his long list of typical saddle repairs; he’ll tell what’s involved when repairing each and the best way that he knows to go about doing the job. Cleaning saddles and tack and refurbishing leather will also be focused upon.

Materials to bring: Notebook, pencils, camera, and questions; you’re welcome to bring samples of things you have questions about (even saddles).

Workshop Instructor: Bob Klenda has been carving leather since 1959 and making saddles since 1962. As past president of the CSMA, he is accustomed to teaching saddle making and leather carving.
