Workshop Description: Have you seen the cover of the January/February 2026 Leather Crafter’s Journal? In this workshop, you will recreate that cover art from one piece of leather! You will learn to present wood realistically in leather, to work with the swivel knife and modeling tools, and do various types of embossing utilizing leather dust. This is a great installation work all around and fit for any home or shop or as a gift!

Materials to bring: Tooling stone, technical graphite pencil 0.7 B, eraser, plastic ruler, headlamp, tooling stone, spray bottle or sponge & water dish, cutting board, mallet, scalpel and blades, bone folder, fine sharp stylus, swivel knife and strop, hair tool or blade, modeling tools (various spoons), ball end modeler, awl 2-2,5 mm, steep beveler (different sizes), basket stamp X812 Ivan or Craftool if you want to add a basketweave pattern, fine camouflage or border stamps, edge beveler nr.1, wood slicker, fine brushes, and little glass cups for oil dye.

Workshop Instructor: Jürgen Volbach is a leatherworker from Cologne, Germany, who had his first lessons 30 years ago with the famous boot and saddle maker, Don Atkinson in Kerrville/Ingram, Texas. He worked with leather every day, making leather designs and toolings and carvings for clients using old and new leather skills. In recent years, he has used modeling tools more and more in his leatherwork, especially with 3-dimensional pieces. Jürgen teaches many workshops in his work space in Cologne and other countries/towns to teach students the different techniques. He is the 2020 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft. Jürgen speaks German and English.
