Workshop Description: Students in this class will make a braided rawhide hatband from start to finish. Class will begin with a PowerPoint demonstration on the step-by-step process for making rawhide and transforming it into braided, functional art. Then we go hands on with students learning how to temper dry rawhide, cut and bevel string, and braiding their very own rawhide hatband. No previous braiding experience needed. Topics covered: how to make rawhide; tools used in braiding; cutting and beveling strings; how to dye rawhide different colors; tying crown knots; making a “Rattlesnake Braid”; and braiding and crafting your own hatband.
Materials to bring: Students should bring note taking items and enthusiasm for learning. All tools and materials provided.
Workshop Instructor: Scott’s braiding career began at age six. One day, his dad was at the barn working a young horse and Scott asked him when he was going to teach him how to braid. He told Scott to find some bailing twine and then proceeded to show him the process of braiding three strands. Scott was instantly hooked, and so began a lifelong love of braiding and creating. Education and preservation of Western Crafts has become a passion of his, and he loves teaching and seeing people reach their goals, while finding their own love of braiding.
