Workshop Description: In this workshop we will work on a lion’s head in Baroque style in high relief, and learn how to work with extreme hair structures and highlight them. After completion, Jürgen will demonstrate how to paint the bronze effects on this classic head or give it a verdigris (copper-oxidized) look. Each participant will receive a pattern to tool a leather frame in the acanthus style that compliments the Baroque piece.
Materials to bring: Tooling stone, water sprayer, headlamp, mallet, technical graphite pencil )0.5 mm B9), different sizes of steep bevelers, swivel knife, strop, 4 sizes of ball end modelers, modeling spoons (fine spoon, bigger spoons), hairing tool, fine tip stylus, and a backgrounder to your taste!
Workshop Instructor: Jürgen Volbach is a leatherworker from Cologne, Germany, who had his first lessons 30 years ago with the famous boot and saddle maker, Don Atkinson in Kerrville/Ingram, Texas. He worked with leather every day, making leather designs and toolings and carvings for clients using old and new leather skills. In recent years, he has used modeling tools more and more in his leatherwork, especially with 3-dimensional pieces. Jürgen teaches many workshops in his work space in Cologne and other countries/towns to teach students the different techniques. He is the 2020 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.
