Workshop Description: The Spanish Ring knot seems to escape a lot of people. With a little practice, it is actually a fairly easy knot to braid. It can be made with a single pass, two pass, three pass and beyond. Nick and Joe, who will be teaching this workshop together, have been trying to get enough time in previous workshops to teach this, but have failed miserably. They finally decided to make it a workshop all its own. You will be braiding this knot on a mandrel using 1/8th-inch kangaroo lace. There will be time to do multiple knots and work on the skills it takes to braid this button long after the workshop has ended. The goal is to learn the single pass and the two pass Spanish Ring Knot. Time permitting, we will work on the three pass knot.
Materials to bring: Reference book with the Spanish ring knot if you have one, an awl (we will have extra), and a willingness to learn.
Workshop Instructor: Joe Boyles began braiding while in Australia in 1988 after getting his first Ron Edwards book. Back home, he was taught rawhide by Mary Fields, who is in the Bruce Grant books, and also attended Dale Moore’s saddle building school. Kangaroo and rawhide are his preferred materials to braid with. He started braiding Australian stock whips a few years ago and is now starting on bullwhips. Joe enjoys teaching and will keep you entertained while you learn.
An accomplished braider currently residing in Casper, Wyoming, Nick Carter is a working man’s braider who has been making and sometimes selling his braided goods for over 24 years. Always willing to share and learn techniques, Nick offers his services with great enthusiasm every chance he gets.
