All skill levels welcome!
Workshop Description: You will work along side Don Gonzales in this workshop to learn how to draw and lay out floral tooling patterns for leather projects. We will discuss the elements of floral pattern design, flow, and balance, as well as decision-making within any project as to how to fill odd-shaped spaces with elegant floral artwork. This workshop is designed as Beginner to Intermediate level, but all experience levels are welcome! This is a paper and pencil class designed to give you a good foundation for designing your own floral carving patterns.
Materials to bring: You will not need any leather tools for this class. You will need a sketchbook, pencils (mechanical or #2 pencils), erasers, circle jig of some sort for making circles, tracing paper, and any other drawing tools or supplies you may want to bring. If you have trouble with lighting, you may bring a head lamp as well.
Workshop Instructor: Don Gonzales become interested in leathercraft while in 8th grade, when a friend’s father shared some simple skills with him. He went from making sheaths and belts and saddle repairs to eventually owning his own shop and going full-time in 2004. He credits Jimmy Plantt for many life lessons and skills learned, in addition to those from his many online friends. In October of 2020, Don launched a new, weekly podcast, Lost Trade. Don lives in Moulton, Texas.
