Workshop Description: In this workshop, you’ll create a leather magnetic cowboy hat hanger designed to hang from the backrest of a pickup seat or from a hanger inside your vehicle, providing a secure and convenient place to keep your hat while traveling. The magnetic hanger will be constructed using Hermann Oak English Bridle leather. The project will consist of an outer leather piece and a liner, which will be buck stitched together for strength and a clean, classic appearance. (The class project will not be stamped like the example photo.) You’ll also install high-powered magnets designed to provide a strong, reliable hold to help keep your hat securely in place while on the road. Throughout the class, Leandra will cover cutting and preparing the leather, buck stitching, magnet installation, edging and burnishing, and proper assembly techniques to achieve a clean and professional result. Patterns will be included, allowing you to recreate this hat hanger for future projects for your customers.
Materials to bring: Wing dividers, small edger, trim knife, 1/8″ buck stitching chisels, fid, maul, buck stitching needles, cutting board or other surface to back buck stitching chisels, needle nose pliers, small molding tool, pencil, and a notebook.
Workshop Instructor: Leandra Martin is a leather artisan, designer, and instructor known for her skill in leather bag design and construction. She is now expanding her work into custom cowboy boot making and is currently training with Schwarz Custom Boots. Alongside her work as a maker, Leandra teaches leatherworking classes where she shares her knowledge of bag design, construction techniques, and professional finishing with others in the leatherworking community.
