Workshop Description: Learn to confidently construct and develop your own scrollwork patterns and designs. If you struggle with drawing with drawing scrolls or want to elevate your complexity, or maybe just want help in learning to start, this class will be a game changer. Mastering scrolls is less about natural talent and more about dedicated practice of effective processes and in this immersive class Sarah (Western Skies Handmade) will walk you through her unique approach. You will: Deconstruct scrolls to their most basic forms, talk about their rich history, and learn how to put them back together in a variety of styles; Practice correcting common mistakes and adjusting existing pattern samples to suit various needs. (Students are encouraged to bring in their own scroll patterns – their own creations or a purchased – in order to dive deeper into what works and what needs improving; Discuss the deep connection between your patterns and stamping tools (students are welcome to bring along stamps – bevelers, shaders, backgrounders – for size reference if their selection is limited, but it is not required); Create a usable scroll design you can take home and tool! Grab your drawing book and get ready to find your flow, while methodically building scrolls on a strong foundation.

Materials to bring: Drawing paper, graph paper, tracing paper (optional), circle templates, and pencil/pen/eraser.

Workshop Instructor: Sarah Garvey is a full-time leather artist specializing in intricately tooled purses and accessories. A single mom of two, she has been designing and creating under her brand, Western Skies Handmade, since 2008. With a background as a classically trained musician, Sarah’s distinct style elevates traditional craft with a fresh blend of classical and modern designs.
