Coby James

Edward A. Whitney Academic Center – W 209

Wednesday 05/13 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

All skill levels welcome!

Workshop Description: Come learn how to photograph your leather work effectively with tools you already have – your iPhone (or Android), family DLSR, or even a professional level camera that you already have (or would like to have)! We will be discussing and learning how to use “Home Depot” lighting up through professional set-ups to get the image and effects necessary to highlight your work. Coby will teach industry methods for lighting, staging, and producing professional looking images.

Materials to bring: Image tool of choice: iPhone, Android, point-and-shoot camera, DSLR or mirrorless camera with appropriate lenses. Add a pen or pencil and one small piece of your leather work you want to photograph (belt, wallet, clutch, belt, etc.; nothing large). Coby will be furnishing a booklet of related material that you may keep and also use for notetaking.

Workshop Instructor: Coby James has been a professional photographer for 30 years, operating a large studio in the Houston area, specializing in commercial (advertising and various media), portrait, and volume photography. Recently retired, he has combined photography and leatherwork, teaching and sharing his skillsets with other craftsmen. His experience in leather craft started when he was young, learning by doing “daily chore” cleaning and tack repair on a family ranching/farming business. Over 40+ years, he has made saddles, tack, hand goods, and boots. He continues to do leatherwork in his shop, making mostly items that he prefers.
