Workshop Description: In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the techniques and thought processes for creating custom leather patterns from scratch using a pair of shoulder saddle bags as our real-world example with no prior experience required. The first half covers using AI to visualize and concept your project, while the second half focuses on drafting the physical pattern on poster board. By the end, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to design patterns for any leather project you can imagine. Participants can choose active participation (by bringing their own tools to draft along step-by-step), or demo/observer mode (to watch the instructor demonstrate, take detailed notes, ask questions, and follow along visually without cutting or drafting).

Materials to bring: Razor blade, 2 pairs of wing dividers, digital calipers, pencil, scratch awl, leather, cutting mat to protect surfaces during razor work, straightedge or metal ruler, scissors, eraser, strap cutter, tape, notebook pencil or pen, and headlamp or magnifier to help with detail work. If you prefer observer mode no tools are required—just watch take notes and ask questions.

Workshop Instructor: As a lifelong artist, Daniel Reach has dabbled in just about everything, but the two niches that have inspired his creative side more than any others are leatherworking and airbrushing. In his early 20s, he apprenticed under one of the top 10 airbrush artists in the world. During that time, he taught dozens of classes and showed hundreds of students how to airbrush. As a leather artist, Daniel is a Master Leather Craftsman, and a multi-award winning artist who teaches on two YouTube channels, including Weaver Leather Supply and The LeatherVerse.
