Workshop Description: Using horses and saddles at Mclennan College (20 min. drive) you will learn to check horses’ backs and girths for soundness, build a simple withers model, and fit a variety of horses with multiple types of saddles. Basic saddle structure and performance will be covered. Highlander Ranch is located at 223A Cobbs Lane. See pages 13 and 15 of the trade show book for a map and directions.

Materials to bring: Notebook, pen, and (optional) camera; wear boots or shoes and clothing appropriate for working around horses.

Workshop Instructor: Bob Byrns is the Retired Manager/Advisor for Parsons Mounted Cavalry (PMC) 2004-2020. PMC is a Ceremonial Horse Unit of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University. PMC makes over 35 public appearances each year. Upon his retirement, the Cavalry had 140 cadets, 72 horses and mules, a 1902 horse-drawn field gun, and two mule-drawn escort wagons. PMC’s horses have been barefoot for the last 18 years. Herds are managed in a roaming track system. The horses are trained and ridden using natural horsemanship. Mr. Byrns is a Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) Certifier in Western, English, Jumping equitation and an Equine Facilities Level 4 Manager. He is also PATH certified for therapeutic and veterans riding programs at TAMU. Prior to his employment at A&M, Bob was the owner/operator at Saddle Up Saddle Shop in Tomball, TX. for 11 years. He has formal training in English saddlery from Malan Goddard (London, England) and numerous western and military saddlers.
