Workshop Description: Pictorial carving is a subject many leather carvers shy away from because classes on the topic are rarely taught. This type of carving happens to be a favorite and specialty of Jim Linnell’s. In this workshop, students will be carving a mountain scene that includes mountains, hills, pine trees of all sizes, rocks, grass, bushes, and all of the other elements that make up a pictorial carving. Jim will also be showing alternative ways of creating some of these design elements when someone doesn’t have the proper stamp.
If this type of carving has ever seemed intimidating to you, then this is a workshop that you should attend!
Materials to bring: Stamping surface, stylus, swivel knife, strop, modeling spoon, and mallet. Some of the stamping tools to do this type of work can be difficult to locate because some are no longer produced. You should be able to find many of them at https://proleathercarvers.com/ Bring any that are similar to the following and Jim will show you how they can be used. Figure carving bevelers: F896, F895, F891, F910, F976, F898, F899, F900, F902, F902-2, A98, A99. Foliage stamps: F933, F934, F916, F916, F926, F915, F872, F927, F925, F912L & R, F913L & R, F914L & R.
Workshop Instructor: Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. Now, after spending the last 50+ years working with leather, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Through the business he started in retirement, www.elktracksstudio.com, Jim instructed over 10,000 students during the pandemic. Whether in a large group or private classes, Jim is always ready to share his passion and knowledge of leather working. He is the 2002 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.
