Workshop Description: Take your leather carving to the next level and challenge yourself to think outside the box. Draw inspiration from unexpected places with a non-traditional approach to scroll designs. This in-depth course will cover big picture layout and design, the use of negative space, framing, improving movement and flow, the impact of color, as well as the importance of perfecting every line. Practice creating graceful, naturals scrolls that enhance your design and don’t overwhelm the eye. Apply what you learn with challenging and fun design exercises throughout the class. Take home the designs you create to put on leather later. Discover new ways to embrace your unique style and improve your technique.
Materials to bring: Pencil, eraser, and drawing paper. (Feel free to bring other optional drawing aids such as ruler, compass, French curve, etc.)
Workshop Instructor: Sarah Garvey is a full-time leather artist specializing in intricately tooled purses and accessories. A single mom of two, she has been designing and creating under her brand, Western Skies Handmade, since 2008. With a background as a classically trained musician, Sarah’s distinct style elevates traditional craft with a fresh blend of classical and modern designs.
