Workshop Description: Leather modeling, also known as leather sculpting, is a technique where we use relatively thick natural cowhide that has been saturated in water. For this technique, we do not use a matrix, as in leather moulding where thinner leathers are used, but we stretch out the leather from the flesh side with casts and mallets. Once we create the volume, we shape the surface of the leather with modeling tools, bone folders and add additional volume with horn tools. This technique offers many creative possibilities as we are not constrained by a mould and because we use a 2 mm leather thickness, the results are very firm and stable. For this workshop, we will make an anatomical mask where we will learn all the steps from saturating the leather to the shaping of angles, the creation volume and depth, and other final touches. Although the steps will be similar for all the participants, there will be ample opportunity to create a very personalized and unique piece.
Materials to bring: Leather cutting knife, scalpel, mallet, bone folder, modeling tools for embossing, and a stamping stone.
Workshop Instructor: Michael has been teaching leathercraft for 25 years and generally works for cinema and theatre making masks, body armour, shields, and helmets amongst many other pieces. He has imparted master classes, especially moulding and modeling, in many leathercraft schools and shows all around Spain, like the Escola de Oficios de Vigo or the Museu do coiro de Allariz. Michael has also won several awards, such as the Pieza unica de la Comunidad de Madrid, Pieza unica de San Isidro, or Premio Caja Jaen. Many theatre schools, including the RESAD, use comedy masks and other pieces he has made. His latest work was done for the musical theatre La Malinche, where he did all the leather work and two Samurai suits of armour for an event organized by chef Ferran Adria.
