Jim Linnell

Friday, 03/01/19, 9:00am – 5:00pm Prescott Room, Prescott Resort

Intermediate

Al Stohlman used a method called Plug Embossing to get additional depth and three dimension out of his carvings; he even wrote a book about it. Unfortunately, that book is no longer in print and learning these techniques has become elusive. In this workshop, Jim Linnell will show and explain the basics of leather plug embossing and how to get incredible depth and dimension from your leatherwork. The techniques used in this class have wide applications and students will even have the chance to examine some of Al Stohlman’s original work using this technique.

Students will learn and apply these techniques as they ceate a beautiful 3 dimensional cross. They will even learn how to simulate a turquoise stone as part of the coloring technique used in this project. Jim Linnell is a Stohlman Award winning leatherworking instructor who has dedicated his life to the advancement of the art form and the preservation of its history.

Materials to Bring: Stylus, ball end modeller, modelling spoon, X-acto knife or scalpel, cutting surface, stamping surface, wing dividers, favorite bevelling and matting stamps, background texture tools, rubber cement, butter knife, and a piece of 5X7 matt board.

Jim Linnell

Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. The sounds and smells of those visits are some his most vivid memories of that early introduction to the leather working world. Now, after spending the last 50 plus years working with leather and nearly 40 years in the leather industry, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Jim has taught leather working skills to thousands of students around the world. He received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2002.
