Workshop Description: In 1999, Jim Linnell created a carving of a Bareback Bronc Rider that became the cover of the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal magazine. Now, 20-some years later, he found his original sketch and is ready to carve it for the first time in a workshop at a leather workers show. This time, it will include some 3D embossing. Since this is the Heart of Texas Leather Show, Jim will be placing this bronc against a Texas flag background for an 11″x14″ picture. The bronc and rider will be embossed and the piece will be colored. Jim will probably not do this workshop again, so don’t miss this one.

Materials to bring: Stamping surface, stylus, swivel knife, strop, mallet, wing dividers, modelling spoon, ball-end modeling tool, petal lifter, figure carving bevelers in a variety of sizes, including pointed ones, favorite floral carving stamps, and background matting tools.

Workshop Instructor: Born and raised on a ranch in eastern Montana, Jim Linnell has had leather working in his blood ever since his first visit to the Miles City Saddlery. Now, after spending the last 50+ years working with leather, those sounds and smells are still a part of his life. Through the business he started in retirement, www.elktracksstudio.com, Jim instructed over 10,000 students during the shutdown caused by COVID. Whether in a large group or private classes, Jim is always ready to share his passion and knowledge of leather working. He is the 2002 recipient of the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.

Workshop Sponsors: Hermann Oak Leather Co. and Renia USA
